About

I am a Birmingham based artist who creates work for and participates in, social and cultural awareness events in and around the city. Pictured above with Perry Barr councillors Morriam Jan and Jon Hunt, celebrating my 'Rainbow Diet' creative activity, completed by local children at the Mayor's Community 'Wellness Day' 2019. I also produce submission-based work for exhibitions and am available for commissioned-based art from the private and public sector.

Background

Self-taught in my teens, my interest in art led to requests for personalised greeting cards and posters which, over time progressed to portraits, murals and complex reinterpretations of original art. I entered formal training at the turn of the millenium, studying Fine Art at the Birmingham Institute of Art & Design (BIAD), and Stage Design at University of Central England (UCE). I later secured a residency within the prop department of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre (2002-04), creating scenic effects for staged productions at the Play House Theatre in Liverpool and London's West End Peacock Theatre. I went on to study Music with the Open University (OU), and Opera Studies at Rose Bruford College in London.

Style

As an artist on the autism spectrum my work is quite literal but varies from photo realistic to expressive. At odds with abstract concepts, I convey visual narrative juxtaposed by layers of symbolism. My compositions are created through a 2D lens due to an ocular anomoly compromising on depth perception; this is the equivalent of someone with normal vision painting with one eye closed. Whether pet portrait or complex piece, subject and theme are carefully considered; a process which can involve multiple revisions. Prospective clients should factor this in when commissioning work reliant on a completion date. Please use the contact form at the first point of enquiry.

Projects

I am currently working on a series of paintings that reflect the sensory, social, gender and diagnostic challenges of autism spectrum conditions, to compliment a publication in working progress. I am also exploring visual techniquies to re-interpret the lives of those affected by historical defamation, including Mozart's French contemporary Joseph Bologne (Chevalier de Saint-Georges), labelled the 'Black Mozart'.
